About
Join Jewitches founder and scholar Zohare Jacobi in an introductory exploration of Jewish magic, witchcraft, and folk tradition—challenging the widespread belief that Judaism outright forbids magical practice. Drawing on the Torah, Talmud, medieval commentary, folklore, archaeology, and Diasporic traditions, we'll trace how Jewish communities have defined, practiced, debated, concealed, and preserved forms of magic for thousands of years.
Beginning with the power of definitions, we will examine how “religion,” “magic,” and “witchcraft” shift across cultures and eras, and how biblical prohibitions were often aimed not at magic itself, but at polytheistic and harmful practices associated with the “Other.” Through case studies such as astrology in Jewish law, demons of the Talmud, protective amulets, and women-led folk traditions, we'll dive into a Judaism rich with spiritual practices that exist alongside — and sometimes in tension with — legal and theological frameworks.
But, where would we be without touching on the gendered history of magic, the marginalization of women’s practices, and the devastating impact of medieval antisemitism and European witch hunts on Jewish spiritual life.
This lecture is approximately 1:30-2:00 hours long, with opportunities to ask questions at the end. It will take place via Zoom on January 11th, 2026 at 11:00 am PST.
